Small talk can be really funny/lame sometimes. For example, here is a conversation I just had at the mailbox with a neighbor I don't know at 9:00 at night.
Me: "Hi, how are you?"
Her: "Good. (awkward pause) It sure is dark outside."
Me: "Yeah, it really is. (another awkward pause) Well, I'll see you later."
Her: "Bye."

Kara! I'm surprised you didn't keep talking...actually, I'm more surprised that you're not already good friends with all your neighbors! You're wonderful at getting to know people. Funny story though.

I only chat with a few of my neighbors. There are a lot of renters who come and go, and I have to admit that I am not as friendly sometimes as I should be. Plus, I was excited to see that I got a new shirt in the mail and I really wanted to go and look at it :).
